Custom Pet Portrait: A Five-Year Reunion, Crowning the Beloved Dog of an Old Friend from New Zealand
An old friend, who had been living in New Zealand and hadn't seen me in five years, came across my work on social media and immediately sent me a photo of their beloved dog, requesting a custom "royal portrait". Fate can be quite fascinating at times. Yesterday, I received a private message on my social media account from an old friend who has been living in New Zealand for over five years and whom I hadn't seen in a long time. He saw that I had been working on custom pet portraits and immediately sent me a photo of his dog, a lovely and happy-go-lucky dog that he had brought with him from home. My friend excitedly told me over voice message: "Brother, create a 'King's Portrait' for my dog! However, I have one request - don't make it too serious or intimidating, make it lively and vivid, and preserve its usual friendly and approachable feel, after all, it's the best 'master' in our household." Inspiration and Moe Contrast: Creating the Most Down-to-Earth "King" In our painting style library, the "Royal Portrait" (The King) typically represents the ultimate majesty, power, and unapproachable coolness. The gold crown adorned with gems, the heavy red silk velvet cloak with ermine fur, and the navy blue royal embroidered officer's uniform - these elements naturally have a sense of distance. However, my friend's request gave me a new perspective: why can't the king smile? The dog in the original photo was smiling outdoors, with clear and warm eyes. As a painter, I decided to preserve the luxurious texture of the royal attire while perfectly transplanting the dog's signature "healing smile" into the context of classical oil painting.
Creation Process: The Collision of Velvet and Smiles When I started painting, I focused most of my energy on harmonizing the light and shadows. To highlight the luxury of the clothing, I used delicate brushstrokes to depict the intricate gold wheat ear embroidery on the clothes and the row of royal medals on the chest that symbolize honor. The dark areas of the red silk velvet cloak were deeply pressed to set off the bright areas in the front. However, when handling the face, I abandoned the traditional strong contrast shadows and instead gave the dog's face a very soft and warm light. I carefully preserved the friendly curve of its slightly open mouth and eyes. When the dazzling crown was placed on this fluffy and smiling head, it created an extremely clever "Moe contrast".
When the high-definition original image of "Smiling King" was transmitted to New Zealand over the internet, my friend immediately made a video call. "Hahaha, it's perfect! This is him! Wearing such exaggerated clothes, but looking at those eyes, it's just my dog that only knows how to wag its tail!" He was laughing very happily on the other end of the video call. Although we hadn't seen each other in five years, we chatted for a long time about our recent lives, our past days of struggling together in our home country, and this dog that had accompanied him to the Southern Hemisphere. Sometimes, art creation is not just about completing a beautiful picture, but also about connecting people and bridging the past and present. This unique "Royal Portrait" not only "crowned" the dog but also left a vivid memorial to our friendship that spanned five years and half of the earth.

Hahaha ABiao, you absolute legend! You took my backyard mouser and crowned him like he just ascended the throne at Buckingham Palace! My Kiwi neighbors came over and stared in disbelief, asking if he was some sacred royal breed from the East! The crimson velvet mantle is epic. Drinks on me when I return to visit!
The contrast is brilliant! A goofy, healing smiling face wrapped in the most imposing royal regalia is pure perfection! Traditional royal portraits are so stiff and intimidating, but this captures sheer joy. Bookmarked—my Corgi's birthday portrait is definitely coming here!
